การฝังเข็มได้รับการยอมรับจากองค์การอนามัยโลก
ฝังเข็ม สามารถรักษาอาการต่างๆได้เป็นอย่างดี ในปี 2003 องค์การอนามัยโลก หรือ WHO และ National Institutes of Health (NIH) ได้เผยแพร่รายงานที่เรียกว่า “Acupunture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials.” ด้านล่างนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของรายงานดังกล่าว

Diseases and disorders that can be treated with acupuncture
การฝังเข็มรักษาโรคหรืออาการที่ได้รับการทดสอบในกลุ่มตัวอย่าง แบบควบคุมทางคลินิก ได้รายงานผลแบ่งออกเป็น 4 ประเภท ดังนี้
The diseases or disorders for which acupuncture therapy has been tested in controlled clinical trials reported in the recent literature can be classified into four categories as shown below.
1). โรค อาการ หรือสภาวะที่การรักษาด้วยการฝังเข็มให้ผลเป็นอย่างดี (Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved-through controlled trials-to be an effective treatment)
- Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy ผลข้างเคียงจากการรักษาด้วยเคมีบำบัด/รังสีบำบัด
- Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever) เยื่อจมูกอักเสบเหตุภูมิแพ้(รวมทั้งไข้ละอองฟาง)
- Biliary colic อาการปวดถุงน้ำดี
- Depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke) ภาวะซึมเศร้า
- Dysentery, acute bacillary โรคบิดไม่มีตัว
- Dysmenorrhoea, primary ปวดระดูปฐมภูมิ
- Epigastralgia, acute (in peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, and gastrospasm) ปวดยอดอก อาการปวดบริเวณใต้ลิ้นปี่
- Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders) ปวดบริเวณใบหน้า
- Headache ปวดหัว ปวดศีรษะ
- Hypertension, essential ความดันโลหิตสูง
- Hypotension, primary ความดันโลหิตต่ำ ปฐมภูมิ
- Induction of labour ปวดท้องคลอดบุตร
- Knee pain ปวดเข่า
- Leukopenia เม็ดเลือดขาวน้อยผิดปกติ
- Low back pain ปวดหลังล่าง, ปวดหลังส่วนล่าง
- Malposition of fetus, correction of การปรับท่าของทารกในครรภ์
- Morning sickness แพ้ท้อง
- Nausea and vomiting คลื่นไส้ อาเจียร
- Neck pain ปวดคอ ปวดต้นคอ
- Pain in dentistry ปวดฟัน ปวดช่องปาก (including dental pain and temporomandibular dysfunction)
- Periarthritis of shoulder การอักเสบรอบหัวไหล่
- Postoperative pain ปวดนิ่ว
- Renal colic ปวดหลังผ่าตัด
- Rheumatoid arthritis ปวดข้อรูมาตอยด์
- Sciatica ปวดประสาทไซแอติก
- Sprain
- Stroke โรคหลอดเลือดในสมอง
- Tennis elbow
2). โรค อาการ หรือสภาวะที่การฝังเข็มให้ผลดี แต่ยังต้องได้รับการพิสูจน์ต่อไป (Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown but for which further proof is needed)
- Abdominal pain ปวดท้อง (in acute gastroenteritis or due to gastrointestinal spasm)
- Acne vulgaris สิว
- Alcohol dependence and detoxification การติดเหล้า
- Bell’s palsy อัมพาตครึ่งหน้า
- Bronchial asthma หอบหืด
- Cancer pain ปวด จากโรคมะเร็ง
- Cardiac neurosis โรคหัวใจ
- Cholecystitis, chronic, with acute exacerbation ถุงน้ำดีอักเสบเรื้อรังที่มีอาการกำเริบเฉียบพลัน
- Cholelithiasis นิ่วในถุงน้ำดี
- Competition stress syndrome โรคเครียด
- Craniocerebral injury, closed

- Epidemic haemorrhagic fever
Epistaxis, simple (without generalized or local disease) - Eye pain due to subconjunctival injection

- Recurrent lower urinary-tract infection
- Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
- Retention of urine, traumatic
- Schizophrenia โรคจิต
- Sialism, drug-induced
- Sjögren syndrome
- Sore throat (including tonsillitis) เจ็บคอ ต่อมทอนซิลอักเสบ
- Spine pain, acute ปวดกระดูกสันหลังเฉียบพลัน
- Stiff neck คอเคล็ด
- Temporomandibular joint dysfunction ข้อต่อผิดปกติ
- Tietze syndrome
- Tobacco dependence ติดบุหรี่
- Tourette syndrome

3). โรค อาการ หรือสภาวะ ที่การฝังเข็มให้ผลดีในบางบุคคล แต่ถือว่าเป็นทางเลือกที่น่าลอง เนื่องจากการรักษาด้วยหนทางอื่นทำได้ยาก (Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which there are only individual controlled trials reporting some therapeutic effects, but for which acupuncture is worth trying because treatment by conventional and other therapies is difficult)
- Chloasma เกลื้อน
- Choroidopathy, central serous
- Colour blindness ตาบอดสี
- Deafness หูหนวก
- Hypophrenia
- Irritable colon syndrome
- Neuropathic bladder in spinal cord injury
- กระเพาะปัสสาวะอักเสบ เนื่องจากการบาดเจ็บจากกระดูกสันหลัง
- Pulmonary heart disease, chronic
- Small airway obstruction การอุดตันของทางเดินหายในขนาดเล็ก
4). โรค อาการ หรือสภาวะ ที่การฝังเข็มอาจให้ผลดี แต่ควรอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของแพทย์แผนปัจจุบัน (Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture may be tried provided the practitioner has special modern medical knowledge and adequate monitoring equipment)
- Coma อาการโคม่า
- Convulsions in infants การชักในทารก
- Coronary heart disease (angina pectoris)
- Diarrhoea in infants and young children ท้องเสียในทารก หรือเด็กเล็ก
- Encephalitis, viral, in children, late stage โรคไข้สมองอักเสบในเด็ก
- Paralysis, progressive bulbar and pseudobulbar

- อาการคลื่นไส้อาเจียน
- อาการปวดต้นคอ
- อาการปวดทางทันตกรรม (การทำงานผิดปกติของข้อขากรรไกร)
- อาการอักเสบรอบข้อไหล่
- อาการปวดนิ่วไต
- อาการปวดหลังการผ่าตัด
- ข้ออักเสบจากรูมาทอยด์
- อาการปวดตามประสาทไซแอติก
- โรคหลอดเลือดสมอง
